SAIC Awarded $49 Million Contract to Continue Supporting U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Systems Program Company to Provide Support for Marine Mammals Trained to Provide Security, and Identify and Mark Objects at Sea Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE: SAI) today announced it has been awarded a prime contract by the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SSC) Pacific to provide training and care for marine mammals that are part of the Navy's Marine Mammal Systems (MMS) based at Naval Submarine Bases in Kings Bay, Ga., and Point Loma and San Diego, Calif. The follow-on contract has a one year base period of performance, four one-year options, and a total value of more than $49 million if all options are exercised. The Navy's Marine Mammal Systems (MMS) use dolphins and sea lions to find and mark the location of underwater objects. Dolphins use their technologically-unmatched sonar, and sea lions use their sensitive underwater directional hearing and low-light vision, to detect objects in the water and on the sea floor. The animals are trained to provide security by patrolling areas, and to identify and mark objects for retrieval, including those presenting a danger to personnel. Under the contract, SAIC will provide care and training of the MMS's marine mammals, and will also provide personnel, and develop training and curriculum as required in support of the MMS program. The daily management of the program is conducted by SSC Pacific's Biosciences Division, Code 71500. "SAIC has supported the Navy's Marine Mammal Program since 1986, providing talented and committed staff who deliver the critical training needed to fulfill the MMS's critical mission needs," said Tom Baybrook, SAIC senior vice president and business unit manager. "We look forward to continuing our support of this important customer, and doing our part to help keep those at sea safe from harm."
