No need to speak the language. Phraselator at DESI 2009 The UK-based specialist in mobile and portable public address (PA) systems STG Media Systems has added a new product to its arsenal - a mobile translation system. The Phraselator P2 is a handheld speech-to-speech translation system with automatic speech recognition technology that allows instantaneous translation without voice training. It has been designed to take some heavy punishment and as well as being rugged with an IP54 design standard for fine dust and water intrusion, its features include large on-screen icons, as well as buttons and text display that allow for gloved-hand interaction. The latest version is capable of translating over 100,000 preloaded phrases in over 40 languages - and it is also possible to program it so the phrases can be accessed through voice activation. Suzanne Coop of STG Media Systems points out that the Phraselator has seen some heavy testing. Early models were used by the military in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002 and 2003, and the P2 was released in 2004. "We believe the Phraselator would greatly benefit the fire service, especially in evacuation scenarios such as hazardous chemicals, floods and wild fires, when a message needs to be clearly relayed to large numbers of people." The LAPD uses the Phraselator and it has created its own crowd control module in four languages.
